"The Sniper," a short story written by Liam O'Flaherty
takes place in the streets of Dublin that have now become a
battlefield in Ireland's struggle for independence. A fight between 2
groups; the Free Staters and the Republicans. On a rooftop, a
Republican sniper lay watching with his rifle beside him watching for
any movement. One small mistake was all it took for his 'enemy' to
know where he was. The flare of the cigarette gave way his spot, and
from there on, it was war. The 2 snipers were shooting at each other
to no prevail until the Republican sniper gets wounded on his arm.
The sniper realizes that he must do something in order for him to
come out alive. He comes up with a plan, but does not realize the
consequences of his decision.
MAIN IDEA: I think what Liam is trying to show is what an impact
of war can have on people and how it can transform their way of
thinking. It doesn't matter how old you are, if war is breaking out,
it does have a impact on everyone and everyone reacts to it
differently. A war can effect someone emotionally and mentally. A lot
of soldiers from the past wars are still suffering from Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder. War can have an impact on anyone.
